Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are dentures that are thoughtfully planned and designed by your Denturist and placed by your dentist immediately following the extraction of one or more of your teeth.  This treatment option means there is no waiting period when you are without a smile.

Occasionally, immediate dentures are placed within the early weeks following extraction due to patient preference or as warranted by specific medical conditions.  These are sometimes referred to as “post extraction immediates”.

At Gem Denture Clinic we review with patients that the initial denture should be considered as a “band-aid” following a surgical procedure and cannot be expected to provide the function of natural teeth, especially during the initial 2-3 months of healing. The initially placed denture's main purpose is to provide a smile, while promoting clotting where the teeth were pulled and protect the mouth during healing.

Following your extractions and the placement of your initial denture, your gums and bones will change shape significantly in the days and months following.  This change in the shape of your mouth subsequently results in an ill-fit in your initial denture.  The denture must be "refit" by your Denturist to maintain comfort and function.

At the clinic, our state-of-the-art digital denture workflow enables us to fabricate temporary dentures that will be replaced as needed to accommodate the rapid changes in the mouth.

Once your Denturist is satisfied that the mouth has stabilized in its healing (generally 10-12 months following extractinos), she will design and fabricate your finalized, permanent denture.
